I DIDN’T ASK FOR THIS:
A LIFETIME OF DICK PICS
After receiving “a dick pic so beautiful it should be in a museum,” an idea was born; a home full of penises. A gallery that would mirror my exhaustion with the constant harassment that women are expected to silently endure. What started as a subversive, educational art exhibit quickly became a viral, traveling, 2-day feminist festival with over 15,000 attendees. Vice said the show “redefined female empowerment,” Playboy said we “kicked civility to the curb,” and Huffpost remarked that our “exposure of the normalization of misogyny was groundbreaking.”
Featuring hundreds of unsolicited dick pics inside a full recreation of a woman’s home, this exhibit cheekily illustrated that no matter where we go, no matter what we do–women can never escape the patriarchy. Along side the home exhibit was artwork from 50+ artists, a day of educational panels & sex-ed workshops, an uninhibited dance party, a 200 dildo photobooth, a vibrator vending machine, and a pop-up feminist marketplace.
The series’ mission was to be as much a condemnation of harassment as it was celebration of sex positivity and empowerment; to clearly combat the common misconception that harassment is about sex, when it is in fact about power.
IN THE INSTALLATION PORTION OF THE GALLERY WE RECREATED A WOMAN’S HOME: BEDROOM, BATHROOM, LIVING ROOM, KITCHEN, AND OFFICE; DOWN TO THE VERY LAST DETAIL. THEN FILLED IT WITH HUNDREDS OF UNSOLICITED DICK PICS, THE OFTEN-TIMES HORRIFIC MESSAGES THAT ACCOMPANY THEM, AND FRAMED STATS ON HARASSMENT. THIS TERRIFYING RIVER OF ASSAULT AND ABUSE WAS AGGRESSIVELY INSERTED INTO THE PLACE WHERE WE SHOULD FEEL OUR MOST SAFE AND SECURE TO SHOW THAT THE PATRIARCHY IS, QUITE LITERALLY, INESCAPABLE.
